Is Your Gutter Prepared for Winter?

  • Homeowners living in Northern regions are familiar with the hazards of heavy snowfalls and icy conditions. This can affect many parts of the home, including rain gutters. Gutters are critical for directing rain and snow melt away from roofs and preventing pooling of water. Regular inspections and maintenance of gutters will save homeowners the hassle and expense of repairing rain and ice damage. To keep gutters working properly and prepare them for winter, homeowners should remember the following tips.

  • Remove Debris. While this seems obvious, it's amazing how quickly a bit of leaf, stick, and bark debris can cause water and ice buildup. Close attention should be paid to junctions and corners of gutters, as debris can pack in at these spots. A gutter cover can decrease the amount of debris, but gutters should still be inspected and cleaned on a regular basis.

  • Check Seams and Anchors. A leaking or loose gutter won't efficiently divert water flow. The anchors should be firmly attached to the house, the gutter shouldn't gap away from the structure, and the seams need to be inspected for continuity.

  • Inspect for Damage. This includes damage to the home as well as the gutter. The gutter may not show obvious signs of disrepair, but stains, rotting, or other water damage to the home could point out where the gutter is failing.

  • Confirm Efficiency of Downspouts. Weather and temperature fluctuations can cause parts of the gutter to shift, including the downspouts and diverters. It's important to make sure the downspouts are directing water away from the home to at least ten feet from the foundation.

  • Remove Snow from Roof. Even during the deep chill of winter, a home's heat will cause some melting in the snow on its roof. This snow melt runs into the gutter and refreezes. While a small amount isn't an issue, when large amounts of ice form in gutters, this can cause structural damage to the gutter and roofing system. If most of the snow is removed from the roof, this will decrease ice buildup and blockage.

  • With these maintenance duties, gutters can perform at their peak efficiency. Keeping gutters clean and in good repair is the best way to prevent major damage and costly repairs in the future. A bit of prevention can save homeowners the horror of a leaky roof or cracked foundation.
